What are we preparing for? An earthquake? A flood? Maybe. Riots, roving gangs, chaos? Another “pandemic?” Economic collapse? Foreign invasion? Government overthrow? Martial law? Some combination of the above? And the big question, when? Are any of these already in process?
What would we need to prepare for each scenario? No matter what the crisis, we need common things: shelter, water, communications, security, food, clothing, and sanitation. It is unnecessary to focus on specifically what might happen. Also, the timing is unknown. A crisis could happen months from now, or tonight, or anywhere between.
It can be tiring to prepare for some unknown, future events. For many, emergency preparedness is about as interesting as reading a warranty card. It requires time and effort, and perhaps some money. The key to preparedness is a consistent routine. It is really a way of life.
Ten maidens waited for a wedding celebration. They knew not the day nor the hour, but they knew it was within a couple days. At first, they all had oil for their lamps. They all grew tired and fell asleep. Only half awoke prepared to join the celebration, having brought extra oil with them.
Why is there so much focus on communication in the Fairview Community? Because we all know already how to store food, manage money, garden, etc. Although it is arguably a top priority, communication is often ignored, especially emergency communication. Such communication requires regular practice.
Let us store “extra oil” now and continue practicing and encouraging our neighbors.
Thanks for all you do.
